Many of us were not so familiar with a study named shorthand, but we may hear it at least on some occasions but that seems not so important for us in any case. In India, it was conducted by the Directorate of Technical examinations board. Basic qualification was +12 pass and the candidate should be above 18 and below 27.
You can study this while you do your typewriting. Not so hard, but I am sure that it's not so easy. Have to spend at least two years are more than that. There are few varieties in shorthand but Pitman shorthand was the popular one and has easy steps. Sir Isaac Pitman introduced this system of shorthand over 180 years ago. And even after 180 years, it offers us a job which the degree studies failed to do.
Exam levels were just like the typewriting.... as a junior, senior but additionally intermediate in between just because of its toughness. Using shorthand the words can be written in short geometric symbols which makes you take the notes easily. A huge demand exists for the people who can take notes in a short time. In courts and law firms especially, they are in demand. The courts have judgements running into hundreds of pages and stenographers have sought after. Also, there is good career progression. People who started as stenographers have retired as deputy secretary in various government departments. In law firms, the starting salary for a stenographer is over ₹25,000 and will improve more above by days. This art will help journalists too, who need to take notes as a person speaks. Shorthand exams at speeds of 60 to 80 wpm were four minutes long and split into two passages. Each passage was two minutes with a thirty-second interval after the first passage. Shorthand exams at speeds of 90 to 120 wpm are four minutes long and split into three passages. The first passage is two minutes long followed by a thirty-second interval. The second passage is one minute long followed by a fifteen-second interval.
Shorthand was used more widely in the past, before the invention of recording and dictation machines. Shorthand was considered an essential part of secretarial training and police work, as well as useful for journalists. Although the primary use of shorthand has been to record oral dictation or discourse, some systems are used for compact expression. For example, health care professionals may use shorthand notes in medical charts and correspondence. Shorthand notes are typically temporary, intended either for immediate use or for later typing, data entry, or (mainly historically) transcription to normal writings. But nowadays it becomes rarely used for other works than a job because now we got mobile phones we can record audio with video. You know what, it has only 24 vowels and it was developed by the geometric symbols over different sizes, shapes and sounds You can do what the nomal writtings can't do belive me you can add a symbol for laugh and sneeze etc.,
